Why I love to capture family photos (and it’s probably not what you think)
I’m not crazy about parenting.
I mean yes, I LOVE MY KIDS. let’s just throw that out there.
But if we were to capture motherhood for what it really is, you’d probably see a lot of crying children, a sink full of dishes, and a tired mom who is wondering who she even is anymore.
When I shoot family photos, I’m not capturing it because I think motherhood is the greatest thing ever.
I do it for the grandchildren.
Let me explain:
My parents took a lot of pictures of us growing up, maybe because in the 90’s the disposable camera was super popular. I specifically remember going on long walks with my dad and taking photos of random things like ourselves or the streets. When I look back at those photos, I’m like, “wooooooowwww”. I’m truly amazed at how fast time flies and how quickly things can change.
I love to capture family photos because it gives you an opportunity to tell your story, perhaps to future family members you will never get the chance to meet.
I love to capture family photos because I think about my mom, who passed away suddenly when I was a young girl. I know that tomorrow isn’t promised and at any moment, things can change. I don’t mean to get all sappy… i’m just trying to make a point: these photos are important! When my mom died, we only had one professional photo taken of the four of us (siblings and I) and we continued to use that photo for everything important because it was the only one we had. I wish we had taken more.
So in conclusion, motherhood (parenthood) is hard and I don’t think it’s always picture-perfect. But if we get past the idea of showing up as something we’re not, and simply coming as you are for the sake of telling your story… then that right there makes everything worth it.

P.S. I just purchased a family photography course made by my favorite photographer, Breanne Weston. I’m trying to take everything with a grain of salt simply because I want to develop my own style in photography! But I have to say, getting started on this course has been enlightening to say the least. I’ve been practicing photography with my own two kids because they keep me inspired.
